Food and Toy Christmas collection for St Vincent de Paul

A joint cross curricular venture between the Religion and LCVP faculties at Christmas brought about an extremely generous response from the Rockwell students which was gratefully accepted by the local conference of Cashel St Vincent de Paul on Thursday 18th December. The teachers involved in this appeal were Mr Niall McGonagle, Mrs June O’Brien and Mr Simon Kenny assisted by the students of 3b. This class are doing their Junior Cert Religion project on a community of faith devoted to taking care of the poor in our society, and it was these students who made daily appeals and collections from the various study halls.

Rockwell’s minibus was loaded up and Br Gerard drove it to the Cashel St Vincent de Paul centre for delivery. Mr Flynn, father of Mr Henry Flynn, our resident mathematician, received the delivery and has sent a kind acknowledgement for the goods, which were dispatched to households that were thrilled to receive such splendid goods.

Joining the teachers who coordinated the appeal in the photo above are Principal Ms Audrey O’Byrne and Vice- Principal Mr Michael Doyle alongside 3b class members Christopher Farrell, Caitlin Buckley, Shane Kophamel, Niamh O’Dwyer, Maurice O’Sullivan and Niamh Walsh.

ART ON THE MOVE

Gallery trip report 2014

Every year the 5th and 6th yr. art students, accompanied by their art teacher, Ms. Eleanor Kilroy, travel to visit an art gallery and/or museum. On November 18th the groups travelled to Cork to visit the Cork Printmakers studios, The Lavit Gallery and the Crawford Gallery. They were also accompanied by another art teacher, Ms. Jeanienne McCarthy, who previously worked in the Lavit Gallery.

The Printmakers studios are located at Wandesford Quay in Cork. There, the students were given a demonstration on screen printing and each student participated in the making of a screen print. A tour of their gallery was also given by Frances O’Connor, assistant director of the studios. Following their visit to the Printmakers studios, the students visited the Lavit Gallery on Fr. Mathew St. The Lavit Gallery, Cork's longest established gallery, is dedicated to promoting the work of artists who have achieved the highest artistic levels. The gallery is a commercial gallery with a wide variety of work on display. The students enjoyed the diversity of the work there, which included (amongst others) disciplines such as painting, sculpture, ceramics, glassware and woodwork. Ms. Jeanienne McCarthy gave the students a talk about the gallery and the work therein.

In the afternoon both groups of art students visited The Crawford Gallery. The students were given an hour long tour of the gallery. The tour encompassed the sculpture, painting and stained glass from the permanent collection and a temporary exhibition entitled “Motivational Deficit...”. This exhibition features the work of eight contemporary Irish artists, whom “within their art-making practice have marked the pervasive nature of how recession and austerity has crept, and sometimes smashed, into our lives”.

The art students thoroughly enjoyed their exhibition visits. To give an account of a visit to a gallery or museum is a requirement every year on the Leaving Cert paper. Therefore, not only do the yearly art trips contribute greatly to the students’ awareness of the visual arts but they are also of great benefit to them when it comes to sitting their History of Art paper.

Rockwell College celebrates Darren's magnificent achievement. Darren's mother and his coach, Pat Coady, are present on stage.

Congratulations to Darren Fehilly and Paul Mclaren who will return from Moldova as World Powerlifting Champions. Darren hit a 170 squat, 90 bench and 205 deadlift giving him winning score of 465 in the K2 class.
This must surely be the greatest individual sporting honour bestowed upon any Rockwell student over the last 150 years of the College.
Congratulations also to his coaches Pat Coady, Dan Connolly and Mary McGrath from Phoenix.
It was great to see so many of the TYC class visiting the gym (many travelling large distances) during the holidays, building upon the great work being done on Thursday afternoons in Phoenix and with their teachers Wini Ryan and Patrique Kelly. Let's hope that Darren will inspire them to achieve their potential.
