A very successful Gymkhana was organised by Mr. Dermot Brislane at the Thurles Equestrian Centre on Sunday 22nd January.  The teams were competing for the Fr. Jim Barrett Cup which is named after the priest who started the Equestrian Club and organised an annual Gymkhana in Rockwell for many years.  22 teams competed in all, including one from Rockwell composed of Darragh Ryan, Oonagh Hynes, Hannah Philips and Roisin Griffin.  The team was one of four teams to qualify for the jump-off stage, but eventually had to settle for 4th place.  However, one of them, Roisin Griffin (2nd Year), finished first in the individual competition.

Congratulations to Joseph O’Brien (past student 2009) on being awarded the Irish Independent’s ‘Young Sportsperson of the Year’ award earlier this week.  Joseph, a brother of Donnacha (2nd Year), is an accomplished jockey who, amongst other victories, won the prestigious Breeders Cup on St. Nicholas Abbey in the U.S. last October.

David Hannigan (Leaving Certificate 2011) helped Ireland take the Team Silver medal when he claimed Individual Bronze in the Young Rider (Under 21) European Eventing Championships at Blair Castle in Scotland.  He narrowly missed out on winning Gold which went to a rider from Germany.  David’s brother, Peter Hannigan, another member of the team, finished fifth in the competition.  Their sister, Jane Hannigan, who is in Sixth Year, finished seventh in the senior one-star competition in Scotland.
