First Year FAI Schools Cup Round 4

Rockwell College 3 St Clements, Limerick 1

This was a relatively comfortable victory for Rockwell who have now qualified for the last 8 of this competition with early strikes from Darragh Walsh, Darragh O Connor and Jack Bergin ensuring the progression of Rockwell. Rockwell will need to improve their focus for the next round, with needless fouls being responsible for enticing the opposition back into this contest. The game started at break- neck speed, with both sides intent on establishing dominance in midfield. Thomas Charles, not for the first time during this game, won the ball in midfield, which led to Darragh O Connor breaking down the right flank and sending an enticing cross into the box where Walsh finished, with aplomb, to the bottom corner. Within the first 15 minutes, Rockwell had stretched their lead to three goals, with great link up play between Joe Higgins, Jack Bergin and O’Connor resulting in two quick fire goals on the counter attack, which left the Limerick opposition in a state of shock.

To Clements’ credit, they did not throw in the towel. They began to find their feet and one could state that a sense of complacency on the Rockwell side may have aided their cause. The Limerick side began to move the ball well on the astro-turf surface, and earned a couple of set pieces within the arc of the Rockwell goal. Rockwell’s discipline in this regard must be highlighted, with several needless fouls highlighting the way in which the performance had become lacklustre. This resulted in a tremendous strike from the Clements striker nestling in Adam Daly’s top left hand corner, the keeper being left without a chance. After this, Darragh O Connor forced a tremendous save from the Clements’ keeper from a set piece, as Joe Higgins narrowly hit the side netting with his follow up effort. The Tipperary side held a two- goal advantage going into the break, something which they would hold until the full time whistle.

Clements again started the second half well. However, it was clear Rockwell’s defensive shape was much more secure during this half. Led by Tadgh Sheehan, the backline did a fantastic job of dealing comfortably with their Limerick opponents’. Mark Neville began to cause major problems down the flanks, which probably should have resulted in two penalties going the way of the home side. Darragh Walsh, Joe Higgins, Darragh O Connor and Ronan Walsh were all unlucky not to have added to the scoreline in the second period, which would have provided more security for the hosts.

Excellent performances were produced by Thomas Charles, Tadgh Sheehan, Darragh Walsh, Darragh O’Connor and Sam O’ Sullivan throughout the course of the game, as Rockwell sealed progress to the next round. Well Done to all panel members involved.
